school
reports
by helen dansette
our
favorite suede fan fic author helen dansette ‘uncovers’ some of
the boys’ old school reports. notice the telltale foreshadowing of
interests.
brett anderson – st steven’s, haywards
heath
art
brett’s
still life was accomplished and displayed his flair for melodrama.
his end of year project on david bowie was excellent.
pe
brett
has excelled himself this term as the school football team’s star
striker. he does however have a tendency to let the other boys down
on occasion, as was evinced in the match against hayward high when a
boo from the crowd at his missed penalty kick prompted him to leave
the pitch early. he has great proficiency in trampolining.
english
brett’s grasp of ballard and camus is excellent, and he shows
great understanding of t. s. eliot’s the wasteland. he has
produced some very interesting creative writing this term. his poem
about the london streets was very impressive and demonstrated his
development of an intriguing urban lexicon. his project on david
bowie was excellent.
music
this term brett has been working hard to develop his composition
skills, and i feel that there is still room for improvement in this
area of his studies. he has been enthusiastic about the school’s
new casio keyboards. i’m pleased to see that his extracurricular
activities include his beat combo ‘jeff’. his project on david
bowie was excellent.
physics
brett
has worked hard this term on the key stage topics of electricity and
star mechanics. he has an enquiring mind.
chemistry
brett shows great interest in this subject and has carried out some
interesting experiments.
mat osman – st steven’s, haywards
heath
woodwork
matthew’s project for this term was to build a bird table. he
carried out the task with aptitude and demonstrates great manual
dexterity. he needs to work on scale, however. his bird table was 7
feet tall, so next term he would do well to further his
understanding of ergonomics.
english
though a somewhat quiet member of the class, mat produces some very
good work.
pe
mat has excelled himself this term in high jump and long jump, and
is an enthusiastic member of the school’s basketball team.
chemistry
mat carries out the work set out for him to a high standard, yet is
reluctant to join some of his other classmates in their more
experimental approach to this subject.
music
mat has performed well this term, but he has not completed a
composition for us yet. however, i am glad to note that out of
school time he performs in beat combo ‘jed’.
bernard butler – st spector’s, enfield
form tutor’s comment
bernard would do well to join in more with the other boys. he does
tend to ‘keep himself to himself’, which is a concern. he needs
to build on his undoubtedly confident and accomplished individual
studies to gain teamworking skills with his classmates.
science
bernard has carried out some interesting investigations this term.
he tested different plectrums for tensile strength and measured
vibration according to the sinewave using guitar strings, which
produced unexpected results.
english
bernard has worked hard this term on the set texts for this subject,
which his essays demonstrate a sound understanding of. however, i
feel there is room for improvement in his creative writing, such as
a widening of his vocabulary, although his short story about a
recovering hypochondriac, ‘i feel better’, showed dramatic depth
and empathy.
music
bernard’s work this term has included the composition of an opera
and a very interesting extended essay on the history of the wah-wah
pedal in western musicology. next term i would be very pleased if he
were to join the school orchestra.
history
bernard shows great natural ability in this subject. he has a great
understanding of the topics we followed this term, war &
revolution, and wrote a very interesting piece of work on napoleon.
simon gilbert – st william’s,
stratford-upon-avon
pe
simon has shown great proficiency this term in using the gym
equipment. he is also a most enthusiastic member of the rugby team,
always keen to hurl himself into the heaving scrum. well done!
english
as you know, there has been cause for concern with simon’s
discipline in this class, as he refuses to study the works of the
bard. as you can imagine, this can cause upset in a town such as our
own, and his insistence of wearing chains on his trousers during a
trip to the shakespeare birthplace on a fieldtrip was problematic.
he does however show great skills in literary appreciation and has
produced essays of a high standard.
chemistry
simon chose to experiment with various hair-dyeing brands for his
extended project, and was willing to experiment on himself for this.
however, i am somewhat concerned that the henna has not yet faded.
richard oakes – thomas hardy high,
bournemouth
french
i am glad to hear of richard’s intention to study this subject at
a-level. i am sure his family holiday to france will be a useful
opportunity for him to practice his speaking skills.
classics
richard shows great interest and ability in this subject and i am
pleased he is to study this at a-level. he entertained us all
greatly at our end of term toga party when he played traditional
roman drinking songs on a harp.
woodwork
richard has worked hard this term on his replica gibson guitar,
which, though well-made, did not follow the specifications of the
exam board, which was to make a tea tray.
history
richard needs to increase his confidence in contributing to class
discussion. he has some very interesting ideas which he needs to
share! however, his written work is excellent, and i am glad he has
chosen this subject for a-level.
music
richard has produced some excellent work this term, though i feel he
would do well to gain aptitude on keyboards as well as his use of
the guitar, which i have heard he plays in a group called
‘electric tulips’. i would very much like to hear more of his
compositions, and feel that he would benefit from working on his
music as part of a team.
neil codling – st william’s,
stratford-upon-avon
art
some excellent charcoal and pastels this term from neil, but i feel
he discovered his raison d’être when he laid down his paintbrush
and became life-model for the class.
maths
neil has applied himself well this term, though he has a tendency to
daydream, which masks his ability to gain either an a or b at
examination.
drama
neil has great natural ability in this area. this term we covered
mime and ancient greek theatre, and he produced work of a high
standard in a performance of oedipus rex. i do feel, however,
that his performances would benefit from increased physical
animation.
alex lee – st goldies, bristol
tutor’s general remarks
alex joined us late in the term, yet has settled in very well with his new
classmates. we had heard such praises sung about him by his teacher’s at st
patrick’s, so it is deeply pleasing that he continues to work well in his new
environment.
biology
this term we have been studying the human reproductive system, which alex has
shown a great interest in. alex also produced an excellent marine ecology
project based around the life cycle of goldfish.
music
alex is very devoted to this subject and has worked very well this term on
songwriting and performance. it is very intriguing to learn that alex is a
multi-instrumentalist. he has sung in assembly and at the prize giving as a
member of the school choir.
technology
alex’s work this term has been consistently satisfactory, displaying a high level of craftsmanship. his project, where he designed an aeroplane, was of a high standard.
media studies
alex’s extended essay this term focused on the portrayal of cold war paranoia in cinema. he produced some very imaginative work. well done!
